GASP: Global African Situated Practices
GASP is an international six-week artistic research residency in Madrid (October–November 2025) for individuals based in any of the 54 African states. Focused on situated practices and climatic resilience, the residency asks: What lessons may we derive from the territories we participate in? And, with that, How might the World breathe again?

Jawaad’s project will explore: How do architectures emerge in wounded ecologies? This October and November, Jawaad Issoop will develop Intra-Architectures: Stories of Being-with and Survivability, de-centering architectural knowledge and being in the context of Mauritius—an island country with a composite population where architectural discourse has historically sidelined the pluralism of its social fabric. Jawaad will weave the postnatural framework into his research, intersecting architectural knowledge with several disciplines and ecologies by delving into case studies from Spain, the Mediterranean, the Caribbean, and Latin America.
ARTIST BIO
-
Jawaad Issoop (b. 1995) explores architecture as a political site of memory, identity, confrontation, meaning-making and ecological entanglement. This October and November, Jawaad will be in Madrid developing his project Intra-Architectures: Stories of Being-with and Survivability, de-centering architectural knowledge and being in the context of Mauritius—an island country with a composite population where architectural discourse has historically sidelined the pluralism of its social fabric. With a background in Architecture and Design Research from Turkey and Germany, Jawaad’s work bridges theory and embodied practice, attending to spatial entities as onto-epistemological monuments shaped by colonial and neoliberal forces.
